What is Wing Chun Kung Fu?

Wing Chun Kung Fu is a sophisticated close range fighting art that uses grappling techniques to control and disrupt the opponent’s base thereby opening up opportunities for striking. The controlling and grappling techniques are applied when in contact with one or both of the opponent’s arms; and so Wing Chun’s fighting range is just outside the clinch. In Wing Chun we don’t simply lightly grab the arm; we want to apply an explosive sudden force to it to test the opponent’s ability to deal with forces, just as every other grappling art does. There are basically two choices; I can grab and pull the arm or slap the arm. Of course, there are an infinite number of directions and types of forces I can apply; which one I choose depends on what I feel from the opponent. This is just a taste of what Wing Chun has to offer. As previously mentioned, the art has sophisticated training methods that teach you to develop the ability to apply, perceive, and respond to forces when your arms are in contact with your opponent; this is the grappling component of the art. The kicking techniques are applied to the opponent’s waist and below and are designed to be used simultaneously with the hand techniques when in contact with your opponent’s arms. The footwork provides unique angles of attack by simply shifting the weight. The footwork is also designed to increase striking power and minimize your opponent’s ability to detect your kicks when in contact with the opponent’s arms.
